Economic Downturn and Broadband Usage
Despite the economic downturn in California, broadband use is on the rise. The Public Institute of California Survey interviewed more than 2500 people and found that 67% said they have broadband in their home… a 4 point increase over last year. The national average, reported by the PEW Center’s & American Life Project, is now at 63% nationwide.
An independent broadband task force discovered that 96% of California households have access to broadband and 63% are currently broadband customers. A surprising 95% of those with internet access already have broadband.
The increase in broadband adoption during an economic decline suggests that access to the Internet is continuing it’s transition from luxury to household necessity.
One question in need of an answer, how will the cost of broadband change as it becomes more widespread? The PEW Survey found that broadband bills across the nation averaged $37.10 in the month of April compared to $32.80 last year, a difference of $4.20. Hopefully, this is a trend that will continue.
