Public Knowledge warned consumers in January 2008 of a broadband mapping group known as Connected Nation…  a front group for AT&T and Verizon.

Connected Nation has received attention from media outlets and Politicians alike.

Connected Nation, originally Connect Kentucky,  was created by Republican staffers for then- Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher and representatives from BellSouth, also owned by AT&T.

Hailed in Washington as a model for public-private partnership,  Democrats have had only good things to say about Connected Nation.  Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA), Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Rep. Zach Space (D-OH),  just to name a few.

Connected Nation allows politicians the freedom from creating a government only program, this program instead involves private sector participation.

According to Public Knowledge, we’re about to spend $350 million for broadband mapping data that won’t be accurate, will be owned by AT&T and not the taxpayers who paid for it, and can’t be independently verified.
